Transsexual Jesus angers Christian protestors

Wednesday, 4 November 2009 , Posted by Ed Allen at 07:03

Roughly 300 protestors held a candlelit protest outside a Glasgow theatre over the staging of a play in which Jesus Christ is portrayed as a transsexual.

The Tron Theatre is staging Jesus Queen of Heaven - which portrays Jesus as a man who wants to become a woman - as part of the Glasgay! arts festival, a celebration of Scotland's gay, bi-sexual and transsexual culture.

The Christian protestors gathered outside the Tron Theatre ahead of the production's opening night, where they sang hymns and waved placards in order to express their dissaproval.

The slogans written on the placards included: "Jesus, King of Kings, not Queen of Heaven" and "God: My Son Is Not A Pervert".

Glasgay! producer Steven Thompson said: "Jesus Queen of Heaven is a literary work of fiction exploring the artist's own personal journey of faith as a transgendered person.

"This work is not intended to incite or offend anyone of any belief system, however, we respect your right to disagree with that opinion."

Glasgay! is funded by the Scottish Arts Council, Event Scotland, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau and Glasgow City Council and has been described as "Scotland's annual celebration of queer culture".
